My wife and I received a pepper mill that looks exactly like this one for our wedding 38 years ago and it's been a great mill. I bought this one thinking it would be the same and we needed a backup. It's not. In the 38 years, they've managed to make a mill that looks just like our old one and doesn't grind pepper worth a damn. You have your choice between grinding half peppers or a grind so fine you can't see it. I took it apart and can tell no difference between the two mills, but there's really a great difference. The old one infinitely adjusts between coarse and fine and you don't have to crank the handle forever to get all the pepper you want. The new one is pretty much worthless. I wouldn't buy another one like this. I just hope the old one lasts another 38 years.

This is an inexpensive knock-off of the venerable Simplex grinder from France. This unit is vastly inferior to, but also vastly cheaper than, the original. It grinds with a plastic gear rather than metal and the grind does not have the adjustability of the original. But, it looks great and is certainly adequate, especially at the table where you are unlikely to want a really course grind. Given the price, the original is around 80 bucks, I think this has some value. You get what you pay for and I am glad to have the choice.

You put round whole peppercorns in one end and crank the handle and pepper flakes come out the other end. What more could ya want?
