This review is from: Peugeot PM2/23386 Paris U'Select 7 Inch Salt and Pepper Mill Set, Natural (Kitchen) I'm kind of a geek. Ok, I'm a geek. We've had several salt & pepper mills over the years, and each time a set fails, we've tried to look for a set that was a little more durable. Our last set was a really well built and well functioning acylic pair...and then one day the salt grinder portion of the pair just stopped working. Who knew that you needed a special grinder for salt...I didn't. (Think "corrosion.")
So this time I did some research. I basically found that Peugeot has been making salt & pepper grinders since before the Civil War. And I found out that they use different metal in the mechanism of their salt grinders (stainless steel, duh). And finally, I found that Peugeot is generally considered to be the #1 manufacturer of salt and pepper mills. Once I'd figured out what I wanted to buy, it just came down to choosing between the huge variety of colors and materials. We leave our mills out on the counter, so I didn't want some 14" tall monstrosity sitting...Read more 7 of 8 people found the following review helpful: Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Peugeot PM2/23461 Paris U'Select 7 Inch Salt and Pepper Mill Set, Chocolate (Kitchen) After a recent dining experience in a fine steakhouse (the kind of restaurant in which the waiter not only grinds the salt and pepper at your table...but asks how fine or coarse you like it), my wife and I were determined to find what might be called "professional quality" salt & pepper grinders for use at home. As usual, Amazon was my choice of vendors and their selection was vast to the point of overwhelming. After perusing the offerings, I decided on these even though I am, as a rule, rather frugal and I thought $75 was OUTRAGEOUS for such a mundane item. They arrived promptly and we put them to the test. I didn't like the way they worked but thought that, perhaps, the "adjustment" feature took some getting used to. Well, I should have returned them while I still could...because you DON'T get used to them. The salt mill "drips" salt onto the table each time it is used and set down. Like very coarse freshly-ground pepper? Don't expect it from this product. It requires...Read more 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful: By a reader (Boston MA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Peugeot PM2/23461 Paris U'Select 7 Inch Salt and Pepper Mill Set, Chocolate (Kitchen) Having used Peugeot pepper grinders in the past (I still have a small one that I've been using for 20 years), I ordered the large set. They worked OK for a while, but after a while, they stopped grinding. I couldn't figure out what was wrong, then I noticed that each one had a tiny crack in the bottom part, where the grind adjustment is. I had to squeeze this section tight to get the thing to grind. What a pain. Eventually another crack must have occured, because a big chunk of the wood at the bottom in now missing from both grinders. Useless. Yesterday I bought a salt and pepper set at the supermarket for $1.59. Just turn them upside down, and shake. |
