Product Review

PEUGEOT: France, since 1810. Peugeot mills are renowned by chefs and gourmet cooks the word over for the consistent grind results they produce, their incredible resilience and proven reliability. Compromise is not a word that fits into the Peugeot vocabulary. For each spice, there is one – and only one – Peugeot grinding mechanism: peppercorns; coarse dry salt; chilies; herbs and spices; wet salts; and nutmeg. Add the coffee mechanism, which started it all, and there are seven unique Peugeot mechanisms. Each is designed to derive the most flavor and greatest aroma from its complementary spice. Aesthetically pleasing, Peugeot mills deliver the height of quality, durability, reliability and innovation; making these mills the ones to which all others are compared. Cut and shaped from select French beech wood, Fidji’s sleek silhouette is dressed with a brushed stainless steel top. Fidji classic has a traditional grind adjustment: turn the top nut clockwise (tighten) for a finer grind; counter-clockwise (loosen) for a coarser grind. This mill is equipped with Peugeot’s legendary pepper grinding mechanism. Made of case-hardened steel, it has received additional treatment against wear and corrosion. Its double-row of helix-shaped claws grab and crack each peppercorn, before drawing it down to the teeth for the perfect grind. Mill is 6-inches tall with a black matte finish.

I bought this as a gift for my husband with the matching salt grinder. We've been through about two pepper grinders and they never seem to hold up over the long haul. With this one, I am hoping we will not need to make another purchase, and so far it is by far the best pepper grinder right from the start - you don't have to grind and grind and grind to get a decent amount of pepper out!

The black wood is attractive and the size fits well in the hand. The only drawback, and this is minor, is that it was packaged just loose in the box, with only a small tag around the neck where I was hoping for perhaps a bit of documentation on how to care for it or what to do if it breaks (after all, this was not a cheapo pepper grinder)!

I heard about these through Tony Maws, a prominent Boston chef, and since I needed a second grinder I took the plunge. It's surprisingly transformative in a quiet way; because it grinds pepper so well and so easily, I'm using significantly more pepper in my cooking. It really is a joy to use.

I bought this grinder after hearing good things about the brand and I have to say I'm a little disappointed. The grind adjustment feature is sort of a byproduct of the design and not a feature in itself. Also, the top "gear" seems to rotate off the top of the grinder because the internal grinding mechanism is not fixed in its place. Other than that, the grind is consistent and terrific. The piece is visually pleasing, but I'm a cook and I look for utility before appearance. All in all I'd say it is worth the money especially compared to some of the ones at Williams-Sonoma.
