Okay, Trudeau has responded with how the salt is replaced on this mill. BTW, this is an awesome mill, esp for the price, I just couldn't figure out how to refill the salt:

Try this:

Remove the entire metal top from the peppermill.
Holding the entire metal top horizontally, run hot water over the clear plastic
shaker top only.
Be careful not to get water in the entire metal top.
This should remove any salt that has accumulated between the entire metal top
and the clear plastic shaker top.
Turn clear plastic shaker top counter clockwise to remove.
Repeat if necessary.

Also, please pass on these instructions to the other people you know that have
this mill. Thanks.

Regards,

Celaine

5.0 out of 5 stars Refilling the salt - Took me just seconds, October 30, 2009

I bought this product at Bed Bath and Beyond and recently, the salt needed to be refilled. Like many of you guys, I struggled a bit and we couldn't figure out how it would open. Then I remembered, we bought these jar opening silicon pads from a dollar store (this is another amazing, handy product). I used one pad to hold the metal part, and with another pad, I twisted the lid (just like how you'd open any jar). And in a fraction of a second, the lid was out :)

I was almost going to run it under hot water and I thought I was the only person having a problem :P

Try these jar opening pads, they work with ANY container!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good at grinding pepper, IDIOTIC salt shaker design, August 16, 2009

I bought this item today because I wanted a combination pepper grinder/salt shaker as a gift for my sister. The salt shaker is so RIDICULOUSLY hard to open. The tips found here didn't work for me, but I finally opened it with my biggest-sized Vise-Grip pliers. I'm not sure if the top of the salt shaker will continue to be "removable" or if it will revert to its "stuck" position, again, requiring pliers. The only reason I'm giving it 3 stars is that the pepper has a nice, even, medium grind SO FAR. We'll see how this item holds up but again, it should be redesigned to correct the IDIOTIC design of the salt shaker. (Note that I bought this at Bed Bath & Beyond. There were nine or ten of these on the shelf and because they're "prefilled," I experimented with several of them. Each one ground the pepper differently - some too coarse, some too fine, some just right. The grind is supposedly adjustable but -- even following the instructions -- I couldn't make the adjustment work on any of...Read more
