Product Review

Vic Firth teamed up with popular chef Mario Batali to design the simple and stylish series of "Mario" pepper and salt mills. The Vic Firth Mario Batali 7" Salt Mill is for novices and experts alike – anyone who wants complete control over the seasoning of their dishes. Vic Firth Gourmet mills give precise control through a patented Lock and Grind grinding system. This unique mechanism ensures perfect consistency - whether fine grinds for fish, medium grinds for gravies or coarse grinds for meats. This gourmet salt mill uses a nylon crushing system to deliver variable granularity for salt. And it features a pop-out mechanism for easy cleaning. All Vic Firth wood products are handcrafted in Newport, Maine and carry a lifetime guarantee. Outstanding quality, unique design – the last mill that you'll ever need. New, turquoise color. 7-inch tall.

So, I didn't know that I was such a tough customer about something like a salt grinder, but I am. This one is great. The construction is solid, including a metal nut at the top, within the top to prevent wood depression. The internals are metal and vinyl (standard for salt grinders to prevent pitting). The settings for courseness are all controlled on the top screw. If you like your salt really large, then the top will have just a bit of play, but nothing worth mentioning.

I rate it an A for the construction, the look, and the salt grind.
