Product Review

You'll love this elegant professional pepper mill from William Bounds. The unique grinding mechanism crushes rather than grinds the spices delivering consistent coarse, medium or fine grinds without grinding metal against metal. In the world of spice and pepper mills, William Bounds products are in a class of their own. They add a touch of sophistication and elegance to your kitchen and/or dining room. And because you are using freshly ground spices, they also add wonderful flavoring to your food. Made in USA

Amazon.com Review

William Bounds, a 30-year-old company, prides itself on never having had to replace a grinding mechanism because of wear. This hefty, 12-1/2-inch-tall professional chef's mill feels solid, heavy but balanced, and has a smooth stainless-steel finish. Its classic shape is ergonomic in the hands and will look handsome on a countertop. It's made to deliver large quantities of pepper or other spices, and two short twists of the mill's rounded top delivers enough pepper for a small salad. You might want to keep it in the kitchen, though, where you could season a dozen roast chickens without wearing yourself out. --Maria Dolan

I never imagined I would splurge and buy a pricey pepper mill, but have always wanted a good one. But when I got a Amazon.com gift certificate, I couldn't resist. I like the idea of a ceramic grinding mechanism, adjustable grinding size, and heavy stainless construction. When it arrived, I filled it with peppercorns, and turned it 1/2 turn. It broke. The method for connecting the top of the mill to the stainless steel shaft is a weak plastic part. Since it came apart when it broke, I could see that I was lucky mine broke immediately, so I could return it. There is no way this mechanism would hold up for extended use. And when you pay this much for a pepper mill, you want extended use. Don't buy it.

I cook at home alot (apparently rare in NY), and have been using this mill (and a similar one for salt crystals) for over 4 years and I have never had a problem with it. The only caveats I have is that sometimes the setting moves from fine to course when heavy grinding, also the top may come zipping off if not screwed down properly. I love the solid weight and also the fact that the grind mechanism is raised, so that on wet surfaces it doesn't get in contact with the water, this being the original reason I bought it after my previous mill went rusty.
